A pencil drawing by Eugene von Guerard in the Petherick collection, National Library of Australia, related to this scene, is titled 'Mount Macedon from a point between St. Kilda and Brighton'. The work is inscribed 'Melbourne', lower centre of canvas.

It was one of a number of seascape works depicting Port Phillip Bay that were produced by Eugene von Guerard soon after his return from the Ballarat goldfields in April 1854.

This work was offered for sale through Sotheby's. Fine Australian Paintings. November 1990, Catalogue no. 223.
